Compared to earlier versions, the 3DCityDB v5 employs more generic mapping rules, resulting in a substantial reduction in the number of database tables. Additionally, geometry objects are now directly mapped onto corresponding database types, simplifying the expression of spatial queries in SQL, accelerating query evaluation, and facilitating direct connections to the 3DCityDB from geoinformation systems.
About 3DCityDB
Virtual 3D city models are intricate mappings and inventories of urban environments, utilized in numerous research and application fields such as smart cities, urban planning, environmental and training simulations, disaster management, and energy assessment. The 3DCityDB is an Open Source geodatabase schema and set of tools for managing and visualizing large 3D city models. It is integral to many research projects at the Chair of Geoinformatics and is employed in productive environments in cities worldwide, including Munich, Berlin, Zurich, Rotterdam, Helsinki, Singapore, and London. The tools support the OGC standard CityGML and allow for KML/COLLADA/glTF exports to create 3D visualizations for Digital Virtual Globes like Cesium WebGL Digital Globe, Google Earth, and ArcGIS.
For teaching and students
The 3DCityDB is also used in teaching and student projects, where students learn about 3D city modeling, spatial databases, and 3D geovisualization. Detailed documentation and online courses are available on the
