Mechanical Engineering M. Sc.
A tailormade master's degree
Do you see yourself as a generalist in mechanical engineering and find it appealing to have maximum freedom in designing your degree program? In the master's program, you can choose from all mechanical engineering subjects as well as a variety of subjects from other TUM faculties (including electrical engineering and information technology, economics, computer science) and create a degree program that perfectly suits you.
The formal requirements for acceptance on this Master degree course are:
- a Master's degree qualification (see TUM glossary of documents),
- specialised knowledge of fundamental subject areas relating to mechanical engineering:
- higher mathematics,
- technical mechanics,
- machine elements,
- material science,
- thermodynamics,
- knowledge of German.
What you'll learn for your future?
In the master's program in mechanical engineering, students acquire fundamental engineering expertise and methodological knowledge. Through the possibility of setting industry-specific focal points, they acquire both competencies for solving complex problems in the respective engineering discipline and the ability to work on interdisciplinary challenges beyond subject boundaries.
For example, specializations in materials science are just as conceivable as in thermodynamics or fluid mechanics. Through the targeted combination of modules from different research areas, students also have the opportunity to develop highly individual cross-sectoral or interconnecting qualification profiles. For example, students can combine modules from the field of logistics with those from the field of energy, or modules from the field of aerospace with those from the field of medical technology.
With the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates are able to solve application-oriented and scientific problems in mechanical engineering. Graduates have equally broad knowledge as well as knowledge in selected special fields.

The module lists can be found in the Wiki at Documents.
The program includes modules on
- Engineering fundamentals (e.g. manufacturing technologies, automation engineering, gas dynamics, nonlinear continuum mechanics, finite elements, motion engineering)
- core subjects of mechanical engineering (e.g. electrical machines, robot dynamics, networked control systems, planning of technical logistics systems, interfaces and particle technology) and on
- related subjects (e.g. real-time systems, fundamentals of energy management, management science, project organization and management in software engineering, fundamentals of biophysics).
Please apply through the TUMonline application portal and upload your application documents.
Minimum requirements to apply for a Master's program at TUM are a recognized undergraduate degree (e.g. a Bachelor’s) and the successful completion of the aptitude assessment procedure to evaluate your individual talents and motivation for study.
If you receive an offer of admission, you will additionally have to submit individual documents as notarized copies to be enrolled.
Generally, applicants with a qualification for postgraduate studies (e.g. a bachelor’s) obtained outside of the EU/EEA must have their documents reviewed in advance through uni-assist.
